Extreme Skateboarding at Maple Skatepark in the Outer Banks

Think of the Outer Banks and recreation, and the more obvious water sports come to mind. Anybody planning a vacation to the shores of North Carolina, be it Dare or Currituck County, is likely looking forward to days of relaxing in the sun, surfing, fishing, and coasting the waves on a jet ski. Newer visitors to the Currituck Outer Banks may be surprised to know, however, that an alternative recreational activity awaits them at Maple Skate Park.

Skate Board: A Hobby Turn Serious

Skateboard shed its transport equipment image of the late 40s and 50s to become what it is today, the recreational tool. The early skateboard championships were soapbox derbies held in cities during that era of crude skateboards, which sometimes used to double up as surfboards too.

Skateboarding Has Its Benefits

Skateboarding is gaining popularity in many places around the world. Children, teens, and young adults alike are all becoming fascinated with the sport. Skateboarding parks are being built in many cities and towns around the world and kids are trading traditional sports like baseball or soccer for time spent enjoying the extreme activity of skateboarding.

Why Are Kids So Crazy About Skateboarding?

Driving down the street, it is not unlikely you will see skateboarders defying basic physics, as they slide down handrails, stairs, benches and other various locations commonly found around town. Who do these stunts generally appeal to? Adrenaline junkies.

TreehuggerTV: Sustainable Skateboards

TreeHugger TV gets on board with Comet Skateboards and learns how a sustainable skateboard company is bringing different hoods together. Comet uses sustainably harvested bamboo and non-toxic resins to make its hip pin-striped topped skateboards. Their manufacturing plant also uses a 10KW solar panel array to fuel the process. But Comet is also a place based company and is just as dedicated to making a positive impact on its community. In addition to raising funds and for a sustainably designed skate park in downtown Oakland CA, Comet has collaborated with others to put on Hood Games. Hood Games 4 took place in Oakland, and brought together a truly remarkable gathering of the skateboarders, parents, and friends for a full day of music, art, and of course -- ecofriendly skateboarding!

Skateboard Bearings

Like any contraption with wheels, skateboards have bearings too. Although considered a professional sport, manufacturing skateboards and their parts are still largely influenced by street culture. The bearings are the metal inside the wheels that bear all the weight of the person and the skateboard combined but also provide for maximum mobility. Good bearings are crucial for a good board.

Shopping for Skater Clothes

I hate shopping for clothes especially with my girl. She has to try on everything in her size in the whole mall. Me, I go up to a rack of clothes see what I like and then get the heck out of there and I still hate it. Now I'm waiting on her.

Why Every Kid Loves Skateboards

There are many things in life that I will never understand. The amount of things that I don't understand has increased significantly since I became a mother and began to watch my kid's choices and preferences as they got older. I couldn't understand why my daughter wanted to wear such an ugly shirt with pants that clearly didn't match it, and I definitely couldn't understand it when my junior high aged son came home wanting to get his ears pierced. Being a mother definitely adds mystery to my life. Up until recently, the fact that all kids seemed to love skateboards was a mystery to me.

In simple terms, a skateboard is a narrow platform with wheels attached to it.   A great attraction for the youth, skateboarding became popular during the last century as an offshoot of surfing. In its early days, skateboarding was known as sidewalk surfing. Used both for recreation and travel, skateboards are used on pavement or any other surface that helps a smooth ride. Skateboards can be costly, with the price going up for top-of-the-range models.

As skateboarders gather experience, they start attempting advanced tricks and maneuvers. Of these, the most popular are the aerials. Ollie is one of the most advanced and popular skateboard tricks. Legend has it that Alan Ollie Gelfand invented the Ollie. By using this technique the skateboarder jumps over, onto or up to an obstacle. Throughout the exercise the board appears to stick to the skateboarder's feet. The Ollie is the basic skateboard trick, from which others can follow. But remember, it is not at all easy and takes long hours of practice to learn!

According to the dictionary, a ramp is a slope that joins two parts of a road, path, building etc. when one is higher than the other. It is quite obvious that a skateboarder will find a ramp extremely useful to show his/her skills.

Skateboarding has developed quite a bit in recent years. It's a sport that takes time and dedication to succeed in. Before learning all the tricks and maneuvers the basics must be learnt.

Trouble is brewing for a well designed skateboard park opened recently in Centennial near Aurora, Colorado bringing a much needed area for this suburban city’s many skateboarders. Not only is it an impressive skatepark in a domineering location, but it also has a recreation center and swimming pool available for the town's many residents.

Skateboarding for Beginners
Over the last couple of weeks I've been trying to do at least an hour of skateboarding after work each day. The road outside is smooth and flat, very good for practicing flatland stuff. The kid two doors down from me, Jake, joins in sometimes too, and as he's about the same level we get on well and push each other to do better.

Skateboarding may be popularly known as a male sport, but the women's skateboarding movement is alive and well.

Skate Bored?
Though skateboards were around in the early 50's and 60's and actually very widely used back then they weren't well made and so eventually died out. The early ones were basically just milk crates with roller skate wheels and maybe a handle. More like a scooter. The wheels were the big problem, being mostly of clay, and resulted in lots of accidents from slipping or breaking and causing a fall. Even with better boards the wheels still created difficulty, and the sport pretty well died out in the mid-60's.
